C'est un<br /> petit village à 1/2 mille de la mer, au cœur<br /> du district consacré à la légende arthurienne.<br /> L'église, à l'ouest du village, est en partie d'origine<br /> saxonne. Pour gagner la mer, on descend<br /> une petite vallée au fond de laquelle il y a<br /> un cottage et un embarcadère pour charger d'ardoises<br /> les bateaux. Les restes du château de <br /> « Dundagil sur la mer cornique » sont là, au-dessus<br /> de vous, à gauche, sur le promontoire<br /> de Tintagel Head et on les gagne par un sentier<br /> gazonné qui s'amorce un peu au-dessus du cottage.<br /> Le donjon, la partie la plus ancienne<br /> des ruines subsistantes, est probablement de<br /> construction normande, bien qu'il ne soit pas<br /> invraisemblable qu'une forteresse saxonne, ou <br /> bretonne, ait occupé le même site. Une partie<br /> du promontoire est appelée « île » parce qu'elle<br /> est séparée du reste par une faille profonde<br /> probablement d'origine récente. Tout cette île<br /> semble avoir été comprise dans la fortification.<br /> Au sommet sont les restes des fondations<br /> d'une petite chapelle, une vieille <br /> fontaine, et une grotte appelée grotte de <br /> l'hermite. La vue de la grande côte rocheuse<br /> est vraiment imposante de ce point et va<br /> de Trevose Head, au Sud, à Hartland Point<br /> au Nord.</div>
